Back in the year 2000, I resided in Brisbane, Australia, feeling increasingly disenchanted with the societal norms that prioritized work over personal well-being. The idea of toiling away most days just to secure basic necessities seemed absurd. My curiosity about Buddhism began during my tennis training, where mindfulness techniques helped me excel. This led me to the Chenrezig Buddhist Institute on the Sunshine Coast, Australia.
Following my heart, I decided to step away from the rat race. I gave away my few possessions and embraced a simple life at the Buddhist Community. I was fortunate to reside in a retreat hut nestled in the 160 acres of land at the center.
Engaging in karma yoga, I volunteered as a receptionist at the Dharma shop and immersed myself in the full-time study program attended by monks, nuns, and dedicated practitioners. Studying Buddhism with the community, engaging in minimal work hours, and partaking in profound discussions at the Big Love Café introduced me to extraordinary individuals from around the globe.
Delving into philosophical studies that questioned the essence of reality and the ideal human existence deeply resonated with me. My daily practice focused on cultivating compassion for all beings and meditating. Finding solace in silent meditations within my humble hut, surrounded by nature’s sounds, was truly blissful. Despite its basic amenities, living in the hut without electricity or running water was a profound experience, reminiscent of the Zen principles of simplicity.
Like many others in the community, I committed to becoming an ordained Buddhist monk. Transitioning from casual attire to robes posed challenges, including financial sustainability within the community. After a year, I returned to a more conventional lifestyle, cherishing the discipline and freedom that monastic life offered.
Life took an unexpected turn in 2002 when I found myself leading a guided meditation session impromptu. Despite initial hesitations, my coaching background empowered me to step in and guide the group. This marked the beginning of my regular meditation classes, characterized by a personalized approach rather than traditional Tibetan methods. The experience of guiding others through meditation felt transcendent, as if channeling a higher consciousness.
Despite my unconventional teaching style, I found fulfillment in guiding individuals through meditation practices. However, tensions arose with the orthodox beliefs of the community, culminating in a directive to conform to traditional teachings or leave the premises.
The disagreement escalated when a participant experienced intense sensations during a session, prompting scrutiny from the senior nun. This incident, coupled with diverging views on teaching methods, led to my departure from the Buddhist Institute. Embracing my unique approach to meditation instruction, I ventured into leading classes independently.
Transitioning to off-site sessions, I found my niche in guiding meditation classes outside the traditional setting. The positive reception from participants spurred my journey as a meditation teacher beyond the confines of the Institute.
Establishing a dedicated meditation group in a serene natural setting, I parted ways with the Buddhist community and my secluded hut. Transitioning back to mainstream life, I launched The Way of Meditation, offering classes, retreats, and online coaching. Balancing traditional Tibetan practices with contemporary mindfulness approaches, I strive to make meditation accessible to all.
Embracing the evolution of my teaching style, I continue to share transformative meditation techniques with a global audience, fostering inner growth and connection with one’s innate wisdom.
