Exploring a Unique Concept in Mindfulness
In the realm of mindfulness, there exists a concept that may not be widely known in today’s practices. This idea revolves around the notion of ‘taking refuge’.
In Buddhist traditions, taking refuge marks the entry point into embracing Buddhism. Typically, it involves seeking refuge in the triple gem – the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. This means finding solace in the teacher, the teachings, and the community that follows these teachings. By doing so, individuals embark on a journey to transcend suffering, dispel ignorance, and attain freedom and inner peace. Prior to engaging in formal meditation sessions, Buddhists often recite the ‘refuge prayer’.
The triple gem serves as a shield against negative mental states, guiding individuals towards enlightenment. But how does this protection manifest? According to my Buddhist mentor, whom I apprenticed with for over 5 years in a Buddhist community, the true refuge lies in the Dharma. It is the Dharma that safeguards the mind, catalyzes transformation, and unveils the profound essence of one’s being. Dharma encompasses the actual practice of cultivating loving kindness, mindfulness, and understanding the true nature of oneself and the world.
Creating a Sanctuary for Meditation
Firstly, it is essential to acknowledge the sanctuary that meditation can provide. Establishing a serene space in your home where you feel inspired, secure, and at ease to engage in the sacred practice of meditation. Adorning this space with spiritual symbols such as images of divine figures like the feminine, Buddha, Christ, angels, and other guiding entities can enhance the sense of protection and safety, crucial for healing and personal growth. This safe haven offers you the opportunity to confront your emotions, thoughts, and feelings without fear. It is a place where you can courageously address your traumas and stress with compassion and understanding, allowing challenging energies to surface from the depths of your mind and releasing them within the compassionate embrace of meditation.
