I’ve always had a routine of starting my day with either matcha or coffee. Before even looking at my phone, I make sure to have that first sip. However, I came across the idea of “protein before coffee” multiple times on my feed, sparking my curiosity enough to give it a 30-day trial.
The concept is straightforward: consume protein before caffeine enters your system, so you’re not solely relying on stimulants first thing in the morning. To make it enjoyable, I decided to create a blended protein coffee using HUM’s Core Strength, coconut milk, and two shots of espresso.
What I Noticed
The most significant change I observed was the reduction in shakes. I’ve always been sensitive to caffeine, often experiencing a jittery feeling shortly after my morning cup. However, when I started combining my espresso with protein, that jitteriness decreased.
This blend also became my go-to pre-workout choice. On mornings when I worked out, it provided me with sustained energy without the crash that coffee alone on an empty stomach sometimes caused. Even on non-workout days, it served as a delightful early-afternoon treat — a seemingly indulgent option that was actually beneficial for me.
By the second week, it wasn’t an “experiment” anymore; it had become my regular drink. Creamy, slightly sweet from the coconut milk, with the underlying kick of espresso. Truly one of the most enjoyable additions to my daily routine in a long while.
The Recipe
Protein Before Coffee Blend Makes 1 serving
Ingredients:
- 1 scoop HUM Core Strength
- 1 cup coconut milk (I prefer the carton kind for a smoother texture)
- 2 shots freshly pulled espresso, slightly cooled
- 4–5 large ice cubes
- Optional: a few dashes of cinnamon or a small drizzle of maple syrup
Instructions:
- Pull two shots of espresso and allow them to cool for a minute or two to prevent melting the ice too quickly.
- Add the coconut milk, HUM Core Strength, espresso, and ice to a blender.
- Blend on high for 20–30 seconds until smooth and frothy.
- Pour into a glass, add cinnamon if desired, and enjoy immediately.
The Verdict
After thirty days, I’ve decided to stick with protein before coffee instead of having coffee on an empty stomach (when not opting for matcha). The consistent energy levels, the boost before workouts, the fact that it feels like a treat rather than a chore; this small change in habit has had a significant impact on how my mornings (and afternoons) unfold. If you’re someone who enjoys coffee but dislikes the jittery feeling, I recommend trying this approach for yourself.
