Discover the versatility of baked wonton cups as a delightful base for your preferred fillings! Learn how to easily make crispy cups from wonton wrappers and explore various delicious filling ideas.

Easy Baked Wonton Cups

Step away from traditional dumplings and get creative with wonton wrappers! These baked wonton cups make for fantastic and easy party appetizers with endless possibilities. Whether it’s a sophisticated cocktail party or a casual gathering, these cups are a hit.

Over the years, we’ve experimented with various fillings for our baked wonton cups. Below are some of our top picks. You can also try our chili lime shrimp wonton cups and mini fish tacos that swap tortillas for these crispy cups. Additionally, larger wrappers similar to these are perfect for making crispy chicken spring rolls!

Essential Ingredients

  • Wonton Wrappers: Opt for square wonton wrappers to create mini cups. Choose thin or medium thickness if possible.
  • Oil: Brush the wrappers with avocado or olive oil for a crisp and golden finish in the oven.
  • Salt: Lightly season one side of the wrappers with salt for added flavor.
  • Fillings: The options for filling wonton cups are endless. Check out some fun and tasty ideas below.

Making Wonton Cups

Transforming store-bought wonton wrappers into mini cups is a breeze. Simply brush the wrappers with oil, sprinkle with salt, and press them into mini muffin cups. Bake until they turn golden and crispy, which usually takes 8 to 10 minutes in a 350°F oven. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning.

How to Make Wonton Cups: Pushing wontons into a mini cupcake pan.

While the wontons are baking, prepare your fillings. Apart from our mini fish tacos and shrimp wonton cups, here are a few more suggestions for filling wonton cups:

  • Smoked Salmon Wonton Cups: Fill the cups with diced cucumber, fresh dill, crème fraîche or sour cream, and smoked salmon.
  • Goat Cheese Wonton Cups: Stuff the cups with whipped goat cheese, fig jam, toasted walnuts, and fresh thyme.
  • Crab Rangoon Cups: Add a creamy mixture of cream cheese and crab meat.
  • Pulled Pork: Combine slow cooker pulled pork with coleslaw, placing a spinach leaf at the bottom of each cup to prevent sogginess.
  • Carnitas: Fill with crispy carnitas and garnish with diced white onion and lime juice.
  • Spinach and Artichoke Dip: Spoon in our easy spinach and artichoke dip, adding a baby spinach leaf at the base to avoid sogginess.
  • Buffalo Chicken Dip: Include hot buffalo chicken dip, placing a spinach leaf at the bottom to prevent sogginess. The same technique works for smoked salmon dip or hot crab dip!
  • Guacamole and Shrimp: Top each cup with homemade guacamole and a roasted shrimp.

Makes 20 wonton cups

You Will Need

24 wonton wrappers

1 ½ tablespoons avocado oil or olive oil

Salt

Directions

1Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Prepare a mini muffin pan.

2Brush wonton wrappers on both sides with oil and season one side with salt.

3Press the wrappers into the cups, shaping the corners and pressing the bottoms for defined cups.

4Bake until lightly browned, typically 8 to 10 minutes. Monitor closely to prevent over-browning.

5Allow to cool on a rack.

Adam and Joanne’s Tips

  • Storage: Unfilled baked wonton cups can be kept in an airtight container for up to a week. For best results, fill them just before serving.
  • Filling advice: For moist fillings, consider placing a baby spinach leaf at the bottom to create a barrier and prevent sogginess.
