Embracing Release And Smiling
It is well-known that tension can build up in our neck and shoulders. In the practice of Zen meditation, practitioners often appreciate the light strike of the zen stick on their shoulders to release tightness and stay present. What many may not realize is that stress can also accumulate in the face. Utilizing an enlightened smile during meditation can help alleviate mental tension, bringing about a sense of balance and joy.
The enlightened smile is not a laughing one, but rather the serene expression seen on statues and images of Buddha in meditation. The simple act of relaxing the face and subtly smiling can bring about relaxation and euphoria, enhancing the meditation experience. It is crucial to relax both the body and mind during meditation.
While a zen stick can be used for the shoulders, it is more challenging to relax facial muscles in the same way, unless one is extremely dedicated. By employing an enlightened smile, we can release tension in the face, calm the mind, and ignite feelings of joy and love. The meditation smile helps dissolve the egoic tension that manifests in our faces due to the constant upkeep of a facade. By relaxing facial muscles, we can shed our masks and allow our true selves to shine through.
The enlightened smile promotes a state of calm and balance. Adding a subtle smile to a relaxed face allows us to express and reflect the joy of meditation, experiencing the natural bliss that arises from letting go and relaxing.
Meditation should be a source of joy. It offers a space for peace, tranquility, and deep serenity. In the solitude of our being, without the need to pretend or achieve anything, meditation can be incredibly relaxing and pleasurable. It allows us to simply exist in the present moment, without exertion or striving. This form of meditation is best accompanied by a subtle smile.
The smile signifies that everything is alright, even amidst challenges. The power of the enlightened smile lies in being able to sit down, relax, and smile at life’s complexities. In that moment, we can tap into a peace within ourselves that is always accessible, regardless of external circumstances.
While smiling may not solve all problems, it can certainly contribute to finding peace and happiness through meditation. The interconnectedness of the body and mind means that by relaxing facial muscles, we can also relax the mind and quiet our thoughts more effectively.
Initially, it may feel like we are ‘faking it until we make it’, but as we truly relax and let go of thoughts, we create space in our awareness. This allows us to exude warmth and friendliness from an open and relaxed mind. Eventually, our smile becomes genuine, radiating warmth and sincerity as we connect with our innermost selves during meditation.
