“A happy life requires very little; it all lies within you, in your mindset.”
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus
“If you seek happiness for an hour — take a nap.’
If you seek happiness for a day — go fishing.
If you seek happiness for a year — inherit a fortune.
If you seek happiness for a lifetime — help someone else.”
Chinese Proverb
“When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.”
Helen Keller
Discovering happiness does not always stem from significant events. It can also be found in small, daily routines.
Today, I’d like to share 3 brief tips and practices that assist me in leading a more joyful life.
1. Begin by setting a modest goal for happiness.
Each morning, remind yourself: “Keep your happiness expectations low today.”
By adopting this mindset and holding onto it throughout the day, I find myself appreciating things more fully.
Food, work, weather, and daily occurrences transform from mundane to sources of joy for me.
What may seem ordinary or taken for granted becomes moments I now pause to relish and value.
Embracing happiness in the small things does not impede my drive to pursue larger goals.
On the contrary, it fuels me with enthusiasm and reduces inner resistance as I navigate both minor and major aspirations.
I encourage you to give this approach a chance and see how it impacts your life.
Use reminders on your phone or written notes to keep the concept of setting a low happiness bar at the forefront of your mind.
2. Extend a helping hand.
Assisting others is one of the simplest yet most impactful ways to cultivate happiness.
How can you be of help? By offering value in various forms.
Providing practical assistance.
Whether it’s with work tasks, moving homes, or preparing meals.
Sharing sound advice.
While not everyone may seek advice, if they do, offer your best insights based on your experiences.
Embracing hugs.
A single hug or more can bring solace and improve someone’s situation, even if only slightly.
Offering encouragement.
In a world filled with discouragement, be the voice that inspires others to believe in themselves and their aspirations.
Simply listening.
At times, people don’t seek advice; they simply need a listening ear as they untangle their thoughts and emotions.
Though it may seem insignificant, your attentive presence can be a tremendous support to someone in need. So, be fully present and attentive as you listen.
Providing perspective.
It’s easy to magnify a problem and turn it into a crisis. By offering your viewpoint, you can help put things into perspective.
Together, you can discuss, find humor in the situation, and uncover hidden opportunities within what may have seemed like a dire circumstance to one person. Remember to acknowledge and appreciate yourself for extending a helping hand. Take a moment to quietly reflect on the good you’ve done.
3. Practice self-compassion.
Being kind to yourself is crucial for fostering healthy self-esteem and leading a happier life.
While there are numerous ways to show kindness to yourself, here are three impactful practices I’ve found beneficial.
Control your exposure to positive and constructive content.
Negative messages from those around you or from external sources like media and societal norms do not contribute to self-compassion.
Gradually replace them with uplifting input from loved ones and mentors who have faced similar challenges. Seek guidance from personal development resources that offer practical solutions to your goals and obstacles.
Alternatively, spend more time in nature and silence to rejuvenate your spirit.
Compare yourself to your past self.
Measuring your progress against others can dampen your motivation and self-worth. Focus on your personal growth and accomplishments instead.
Highlight how you’ve improved and how far you’ve come; this serves as a powerful motivator.
Show yourself grace.
There’s a notion that one must always be positive or constantly achieving. While this may sound inspiring, reality is far from perfect, and so are we.
Life presents obstacles, and sometimes you may lack the energy, courage, or time to pursue certain endeavors. And that’s okay.
Instead of striving for an unrealistic ideal, opt for a more humane approach. Grant yourself grace when things don’t go as planned, and allow yourself room for imperfection.
