Discover how to streamline the process and focus on what really matters – uniting your community.
Choosing apparel for your fitness center should be an enjoyable experience. Stylish clothing can strengthen community bonds and boost your revenue. However, many gym owners find themselves overwhelmed by the complexities and uncertainties involved.
My insights stem from managing a personalized clothing business myself. I’ve witnessed common pitfalls that individuals tend to fall into. Thus, here are my suggested tactics to simplify the process and concentrate on what truly counts – fostering community spirit.
Overwhelmed by Choices
Did you know that excessive options can lead to reduced purchases? If you’re curious about the demotivating effect of choice on customers, look into the Columbia Jam Study. This study examined a jam-tasting booth set up in a popular supermarket on different occasions:
- One Saturday featured 24 jam varieties for sampling.
- The subsequent Saturday offered only six jam options.
The booth with fewer choices actually sold more jam jars. This phenomenon has been consistently proven in various studies across different products.
So, where do apparel ordering pitfalls typically arise? For starters, customers may not have the time to contemplate which shirt color suits them best. They prefer guidance towards the optimal choice, rather than being overwhelmed by all options available. While you may have designed a shirt that complements ten different colors, it doesn’t mean you should produce all ten variations.
We often encounter clients who desire every color of shirt we offer. We attempt to dissuade them, but some individuals disregard our advice. Subsequently, during reorders, they might report, “I sold out of the blue shirts, but I’m left with a surplus of red shirts!” In such scenarios, group influence or herd mentality takes precedence. Once a few individuals start purchasing the blue shirt, everyone wants one, leaving you with excess inventory of red shirts. When in doubt, opt for simplicity.
Many proprietors believe that offering diverse styles is the key to boosting sales. However, just because one person prefers a V-neck doesn’t necessitate accommodating that preference. Gym owners often go overboard, requesting six distinct women’s cuts. Stick to one women’s t-shirt, one women’s tank, one men’s t-shirt, and one men’s tank. Keep it straightforward.

Avoiding Collaboration Overload
As a busy gym owner, you might lack the time to oversee the apparel order, but recognize its importance. You delegate this task to the office manager. Subsequently, the manager seeks assistance from friends, who then involve other gym members.
By involving external parties in a pseudo-committee decision-making process, you inadvertently transform a profit opportunity into a chaotic endeavor. Keep apparel ordering discussions limited to you and a few trusted advisors. Although it’s wise to seek input from external sources, the final decisions should rest with you, especially concerning profitability and brand identity.
Emphasizing Brand Consistency
Are you constantly dissatisfied with your gym’s branding? Have you experimented with various logos and fonts without finding a suitable match? This dissatisfaction may be the crux of the issue. Consistency is key – stick to one logo and branding message.
Consider the prominent brands you encounter daily, such as Apple and Rogue Fitness. Their branding remains consistent over time. Apple doesn’t unveil a new logo for every product launch. Successful businesses maintain brand consistency through thick and thin. Identify a branding style that encapsulates your essence and stick to it.
Importance of Preorders
Assuming the sizes for a women’s group training class and ordering tanks on their behalf may seem convenient. Or perhaps you opt to skip preorders due to time constraints and order twenty units of each size.
This approach is flawed! Once again, this pertains to maximizing profit potential. Invest time in organizing preorders meticulously to avoid excess inventory woes.

Timely Apparel Sales
We understand the challenges of time management. We encounter similar constraints daily. However, postponing your apparel order could potentially result in lost revenue amounting to hundreds of dollars monthly. Apparel sales represent a passive income stream for your business.
In conclusion, before delving into the complexities of your next apparel order, take a moment to organize your thoughts, eliminate distractions, and recall the primary reasons prompting your initial interest in apparel.
