When it comes to using essential oils, a diffuser may be the most common method, but there are many other effective ways that have been used for thousands of years. Here are ten methods that can work just as well, if not better.
Quality is key.
Our Essential Oil Blends are crafted like fine fragrances — pure, complex, and suitable for any of the methods listed below.

1. Direct Inhalation
The easiest method is to open the bottle, hold it a few inches from your nose, and take three slow breaths. The olfactory nerve quickly transmits the scent to the brain’s emotional center, providing a fast-acting effect in just 30 seconds.
2. Pulse Points (Diluted)
Mix 2–3 drops with a tablespoon of carrier oil and apply to pulse points like wrists, neck, or temples. The body’s warmth helps carry the aroma throughout the day, similar to how perfumes work.
3. Bath
Add 8–10 drops to a warm bath with Epsom or Himalayan salt. This allows the oil to disperse evenly for a relaxing aromatherapy experience at home. For a complete ritual, refer to our chakra ritual bath guide.
4. Shower
Add a few drops away from the drain on the shower floor. As the hot water vaporizes the oil, it creates a steamy, aromatic shower experience. Ideal for using invigorating oils like peppermint or eucalyptus.
5. Hot Towel Compress
Add 3–5 drops to hot water, soak a washcloth, and apply to the face, neck, or back. This method, used by estheticians, is great for relieving tension headaches or congestion.
6. Laundry
Add 5–10 drops to a dry washcloth in the dryer. Your clothes will retain the scent for days, providing a subtle and continuous aromatherapy effect. Use lavender for bedding or lemon for workout clothes.
7. Body Oil
Apply our pre-diluted body oils directly to your skin as part of your daily skincare routine. The skin absorbs the beneficial compounds while the aroma lingers throughout the day.
8. Roll-On
A convenient roll-on application, perfect for on-the-go stress relief or before anxiety-inducing situations. Simply apply directly to pulse points as needed.
9. Steam Inhalation
Add 3–5 drops to a bowl of hot water, cover your head and the bowl with a towel, and breathe in the steam for 5–10 minutes. This method is especially effective for respiratory issues, using oils like eucalyptus or tea tree.
10. On a Tissue or Handkerchief
Place 2–3 drops on a tissue to carry with you throughout the day. Inhale the scent as needed for a simple and practical aromatherapy solution.
Important Safety Tips
Dilution Is Key: Always dilute essential oils before direct skin contact to avoid irritation. Our pre-blended oils and roll-ons are already diluted for safe use.
Patch Test: Test a small patch of skin before full application, especially with potent oils like clove or peppermint, if you have sensitive skin.
Special Considerations: Consult a healthcare provider before using essential oils extensively during pregnancy or on young children, as some oils may not be suitable.
Sun Sensitivity: Citrus oils can increase sensitivity to sunlight, so avoid direct skin application before sun exposure, especially with bergamot oil.
Quality Comes First
Regardless of the method you choose, the quality of the oil is paramount. Inferior or synthetic oils will not provide the same benefits, no matter how you use them. Our essential oil blends are meticulously crafted to deliver a luxurious aromatic experience, trusted by renowned establishments like Miraval and Four Seasons.
