“Three Rules of Work: Out of clutter find simplicity; From discord find harmony; In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”
Albert Einstein

“Think simple” as my old master used to say – meaning reduce the whole of its parts into the simplest terms, getting back to first principles.”
Frank Lloyd Wright

The daily work we engage in – whether at school, work, or in a business setting – can quickly become overwhelming, inefficient, and drain the joy out of our activities.

So how can we approach our work in a more manageable, simplified manner that allows us to accomplish more of what truly matters in less time and with reduced stress?

Here, we’ll explore 12 habits that have been discovered over time to aid in achieving just that.

1. Plan your day the night before.

Prepare for the next day by organizing your belongings, storing leftovers, and ensuring essentials like keys and wallet are easily accessible before you leave.

This simple preparation can lead to a smoother, less stressful morning.

2. Aim to arrive 5-10 minutes early for appointments.

This allows your travel time to become a moment of relaxation and rejuvenation, rather than stress and anxiety.

Additionally, punctuality is often appreciated by others.

3. Focus on one task at a time.

Concentrating on a single task enhances focus and efficiency, ultimately leading to a better outcome in less time compared to multitasking.

4. Create a distraction-free work environment.

Prior to starting your task, eliminate distractions by closing email and messaging apps, shutting your office door, silencing your phone, and disconnecting from the internet if possible.

5. Regularly reassess your focus throughout the day.

To avoid straying off course, ask yourself key questions like:

  • What is the most critical task at this moment?
  • Does this task align with my goals?
  • Am I keeping things simple and focused?

6. Use lunchtime as a period of relaxation.

Eat mindfully and slowly, savoring each bite. This practice can help alleviate stress and prevent overeating by allowing your brain to register fullness in time.

7. Allocate 80% of your time to finding solutions.

Shift your focus to problem-solving rather than dwelling on challenges. This approach promotes a proactive, action-oriented mindset and prevents negative thought patterns.

8. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance.

Reach out for help when needed. People are often willing to lend a hand, lightening your load and facilitating problem-solving.

Remember to reciprocate support when others seek your assistance.

9. Limit email checks to once a day.

Frequent email and social media checks drain time and energy, leading to distraction and stress. Try consolidating these tasks to a single daily session, preferably towards the end of your workday.

10. Keep emails concise.

When possible, restrict your emails to 1-5 sentences. Utilize canned responses for common queries to streamline email management and save time.

11. Establish clear boundaries between work and personal time.

Set a designated end time for work each day and refrain from working on weekends. Maintaining these boundaries promotes a healthier work-life balance and enhances focus and productivity.

12. Prioritize fundamental energy practices.

Ensure an adequate amount of sleep, engage in regular exercise, and maintain a healthy diet. These foundational habits significantly impact your overall well-being, energy levels, stress management, and cognitive function.
