My Facebook account was recently hacked, leading to the hijacking of our Facebook page The Way of Meditation. The hackers gained control by making themselves admins through my account and then posting violations that got my personal account disabled. Subsequently, they monetized the page by posting viral videos and earning $600 in revenue within ten days. It appears to be a profitable scam.
After much effort, we managed to regain control of
The Way of Meditation page
and will continue to share inspirational content daily. However, my personal account remains disabled due to the hackers’ actions.
Since 2009, I had built a significant presence on Facebook with thousands of friends and followers. Losing access to my account felt like losing a virtual treasure trove of memories and connections. Despite a sense of loss, I surprisingly felt a sense of relief rather than anger or sorrow.
My experience with Facebook led me to explore the impact of social media on mental health. While I initially used the platform for spiritual purposes, I found myself entangled in jealousy, heated debates, and distractions. Research indicates that excessive social media use can have negative consequences on mental well-being, leading to issues like depression and attention span challenges.
Social media addiction is a recognized phenomenon with detrimental effects on mental health. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders includes criteria for diagnosing Social Media Disorder, highlighting the potential dangers of excessive usage.
Reflecting on my Facebook detox, I realized how the platform influenced my perception of reality. By stepping away, I rediscovered the simplicity of being present in the moment and enjoying nature without the pressure of social media validation.
Disconnecting from Facebook allowed me to re-engage with reading books, delve into meditation practices, and focus on personal growth. By replacing social media habits with intentional learning and mindfulness, I experienced a positive shift in my daily routine.
Eliminating Messenger from my digital interactions provided a sense of freedom from constant availability. Redirecting my attention to language learning instead of social media scrolling enhanced my productivity and mental well-being.
Stepping away from Facebook also shielded me from the negative impact of excessive exposure to political content. The divisive nature of political discourse on social media prompted me to prioritize a healthier mental environment.
My departure from Facebook was a transformative experience that rekindled a sense of simplicity and focus in my life. By breaking free from the social media trance, I regained clarity and prioritized positive influences.
