13 Things to Remember When You Think You’re Not Good Enough

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
Eleanor Roosevelt

“You have been criticizing yourself for years, and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.”
Louise L. Hay

It is effortless to be dragged down by your own thoughts.

Feeling like “I’m not good enough” can come all too easily.

You might not feel good enough to pursue the job or promotion you desire. Or to go on a date with someone you’re interested in getting to know better.

Even when you are giving your best, you may still feel inadequate. This can lead to a feeling that you are not good enough either.

These thoughts, combined with the pressures and stresses of modern life, can quickly erode your confidence and self-esteem.

Many of us have found ourselves in this situation.

I have experienced this many times myself, allowing these thoughts to hold me back from what I truly wanted.

However, over the years, I have learned several strategies to prevent these thoughts from arising in the first place and to manage them when they do come up.

1. You don’t have to listen to your inner critic (you can silence it).

When I was younger, I was unaware of my inner critic. This voice inside me would often label me as lazy, doubt my plans, and suggest that I could have done better.

While the inner critic sometimes motivated me to work smarter and improve, it mostly served to undermine my confidence.

I later discovered that I do not have to heed everything my mind tells me. I can challenge that inner critic in my head.

When it surfaces now, I find it most effective to mentally command:

Stop!

Or: No, no, no… we’re not going down that road again!

The sooner I intervene after the critic begins, the easier it is to dismiss it.

2. Find an exception to shift your mindset.

When you are engulfed in thoughts of not being good enough, it can be challenging to shift to a more positive perspective.

You might feel like you are failing in school or having a rough time in your dating life.

When I find myself in this mental space, I ask:

What is one small exception to this belief?

For instance, during my school years, I would recall that I excelled in English class. Later on, I remembered enjoying some nice dates with a person five months ago.

These small exceptions open the door to more positive aspects of my life, helping me focus on the good things I have accomplished or am currently doing.

3. Compile a list and reminisce about positive memories.

Grab a pen and paper, or use a blank memo on your smartphone.

Reflect on times when you felt capable and good enough.

Recall instances where you may have initially doubted yourself but ultimately succeeded or exceeded your expectations.

Jot down a few of these memories. When you feel uncertain or your confidence wavers, revisit this list and immerse yourself in these positive recollections for a few minutes to shift your perspective.

4. Avoid falling into the comparison trap.

Frequently comparing yourself to others and their accomplishments can trap you in a cycle of feeling inadequate.

This habit fuels the perception of not being good enough because it is a game you cannot win.

There will always be someone who appears to be better or more successful than you. Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on your personal growth and progress.

Comparing your present self to your past achievements can be more rewarding and promote gratitude for your journey.

5. Remember that what people share online is often a highlight reel.

In the age of social media, it is easy to compare your everyday life to the curated highlights shared by others.

Keep in mind that people typically showcase only the positive, exciting moments of their lives online. Everyone experiences challenges, setbacks, and worries, regardless of how perfect their online presence may seem.

Avoid comparing your behind-the-scenes reality to someone else’s carefully crafted facade.

6. Limit your social media consumption to once a day.

Frequent social media use can intensify feelings of inadequacy and lead to unhealthy comparisons.

Checking social media once a day is sufficient to stay informed without getting caught up in negative thought patterns.

7. Initiate a positive momentum by starting with small acts of kindness.

In moments of self-doubt, engage in simple acts of kindness to boost your self-esteem and shift your mindset positively.

  • Offer a sincere compliment to someone.
  • Spend a few minutes decluttering your workspace.
  • Assist someone by sharing helpful information.

Continue adding acts of kindness that align with your values and beliefs. Acknowledge each positive action and let it reinforce your sense of self-worth.

Building a string of positive deeds can uplift your spirits and cultivate a healthier self-image over time.

8. Celebrate every achievement, no matter how small.

Recognize and celebrate each step forward, regardless of its magnitude. By acknowledging even minor victories, you maintain a positive outlook and sustain your motivation.

Small progress is still progress, and it is essential to appreciate every milestone on your journey toward your goals.

Find ways to commemorate your achievements, whether it’s with self-praise, a treat, or a moment of relaxation in nature.

9. Express your emotions instead of bottling them up.

Suppressing negative thoughts can intensify their impact on your mental well-being.

Release these feelings in a constructive manner to gain a clearer perspective and alleviate inner turmoil.

Three effective ways to process your emotions include:

Share your thoughts with a supportive listener.

Vent to a trusted individual who can offer a listening ear while you navigate your emotions and thoughts.

Engage in a discussion with a friend.

Seek input from a friend to gain fresh insights and perspectives on your situation. Together, you can devise strategies to address your feelings of inadequacy.

Journal about your experiences.

If you prefer a private outlet, journaling can help you organize your thoughts and emotions. Writing down your thoughts can provide clarity and guidance on overcoming challenges.

10. Avoid self-criticism and seek healthier forms of motivation.

Criticizing yourself may momentarily boost your drive to improve, but it can also diminish your self-worth and hinder your progress in the long run.

Instead of berating yourself, adopt more compassionate and constructive self-talk. Explore alternative methods to motivate yourself, such as setting achievable goals and recognizing your efforts.

Remember that self-criticism is not the only path to personal growth, and there are gentler ways to inspire positive change.

11. Focus on the process and take ownership of your actions.

Emphasize the journey rather than fixating on the end result to alleviate pressure and feelings of inadequacy.

By concentrating on your efforts and actions, you empower yourself to make progress consistently. Adjust your approach as needed based on feedback and learning experiences.

Shifting your focus to the process cultivates patience, resilience, and a healthier mindset, enabling you to navigate challenges with greater ease.

12. Recognize that others’ behavior may not reflect your worth.

External criticisms or negative interactions may stem from individuals’ personal struggles or insecurities, rather than your capabilities.

Refute the notion that such feedback defines your value. Understand that others’ actions are influenced by their own circumstances and perceptions, and you are not obligated to internalize their negativity.

13. Evaluate and adjust your environmental influences for improved well-being.

The content you consume and the people you surround yourself with greatly impact your self-perception and mental health.

To enhance your self-esteem, consider making changes to your surroundings that promote positivity and support your growth.

Identify sources of negativity in your life and take proactive steps to limit your exposure to them. Redirect your attention towards uplifting and beneficial influences that nurture your self-worth.

When you consciously curate a more supportive environment, you create a foundation for enhanced self-confidence and overall well-being.
