Utilizing your body weight for training is a rapid, efficient, and accessible method that can lead to remarkable fitness levels. By following a consistent, progressive approach, individuals can achieve elite levels of fitness using just their body and surroundings.

Bodyweight calisthenics forms the core of Georges Hebért’s Natural Method and has been the training method of choice for numerous elite fighting units throughout history. This type of training has been a staple in the physical education of major Western societies since ancient times, including ancient Greece. It was once an expected part of every citizen’s routine, yet it is largely neglected today.

What adults need is what our kids need—at least a few days a week following a traditional physical education model. This approach differs significantly from the modern physical education curriculum that emphasizes yo-yo training all day long.

Believe it or not, some PE programs now involve four hours of yo-yo-based exercises. In contrast, a traditional physical education model aims to cultivate well-rounded individuals who are physically literate and capable of actively contributing to their community. This used to be the standard for all individuals, before automation took over.

The Three Components of Physical Education

At La Sierra High School in the early 1960s, Stan LeProtti advocated for a classical PE approach that focused on three equally important components: restorative arts (comprising traditional fitness, calisthenics, and correctives), defensive arts (self and national defense), and pedagogical activities (sports, games, play, and theory).

Each day at La Sierra began with a 400-meter jog and a 12-minute strength-endurance routine, which formed the core of their daily physical training regimen that led to exceptional levels of physical fitness.

Following this routine, students engaged in either defensive arts or pedagogical activities, concluding with a challenging obstacle course that honed their mastery of bodyweight exercises. This short period was known as their “off-the-ground” time.

Embodying the concept of “grease the groove” training, La Sierra students achieved remarkable fitness levels through daily immersion in this concise yet effective training regimen. Videos showcase their impressive feats, such as the extension press-up famously demonstrated on television and in magazines.

A structured testing and shorts system helped students progress in intensity while fostering a supportive environment that emphasized student leadership. The shorts groups, or teams, were categorized as white, red, and blue teams, with elite groups like gold and navy shorts for the exceptionally skilled.

All ninth-grade students began in white shorts and had the opportunity to advance twice a year by meeting specific fitness test criteria. For instance, to move from white to red shorts, students needed to achieve or surpass set benchmarks in various fitness tests.

  • Pull-Ups: 10
  • Push-Ups: 32
  • Bar Dips: 12
  • Sit-Ups (2 min): 60
  • Standing Broad Jump: 6’9”
  • Shuttle Run (200 yds total-50 yards down and back twice): 34 seconds
  • Rope Climb (18’ standing start): Hands only
  • Agility Run: 20 sec (50 yards and back with barriers every 10 yards)
  • 880 Yard Run: 3 minutes
  • Mile Run: 7 minutes
  • Man Lift and Carry (carrying a man within 10 pounds of your own bodyweight): 880 yards
  • Pegboard (vertical): 6 holes
  • Swim 50-yard freestyle: 36 seconds

LeProtti stressed the importance of achieving each standard to progress, highlighting the value of well-rounded fitness over excelling in a few specific physical attributes. Students improved daily through a 12-minute strength-endurance routine tailored to their level.

The foundational strength-endurance program that every white short La Sierra student followed daily included exercises like:

  • Side Straddle Hop (aka jumping jacks) – 5 sets
  • Push-Ups – x5
  • Windmills – 5 sets
  • Push-Ups – x5
  • Full Bends – 5 sets
  • Straddle Hops (jumping jacks w/o arms) – x50
  • Push-Ups – x5
  • Stride Hops – x50
  • Push-Ups – x5
  • Toe Hops – x50
  • Push-Ups – x5
  • Squat Thrusts – 5 sets
  • Mountain Climbers – 5 sets
  • Push-Ups – x5
  • Agility routine – 4 rounds of sprint in place; first two whistles drop to plank – third whistle drop to supine position and roll-over to stand

This entire routine requires no equipment and can be easily incorporated into your daily routine to promote fitness, flexibility, and portability. Establishing this daily 15-minute habit is not only sustainable but also highly effective and manageable for everyone.

The La Sierra routine, while effective, lacks sufficient focus on back exercises. LeProtti addressed this gap during their “off-the-ground” time. If you’re not incorporating bar exercises daily, consider substituting Supermans for every other push-up set to engage your posterior chain more effectively, crucial in our sedentary lifestyles.

Implementing the Strength-Endurance Program

For those seeking a greater challenge, a simple daily routine and progress test are available to track your improvements. Take the time to go through the test battery for a couple of weeks and commit to the La Sierra S-E routine five days a week, along with a brief daily jog or bike ride. Additionally, include daily pull-up practice using a pull-up bar. If pull-ups are challenging, follow these steps to improve. After 10 weeks, re-evaluate your progress by comparing your scores.

This comprehensive training program is designed to enhance your everyday functionality effectively and efficiently. It’s a program worth exploring for all individuals.
