The Practice of Buddhist Mindfulness and Special Insight
In the realm of Buddhist meditation for alleviating suffering and attaining enlightenment, there exist two primary forms of training:
mindfulness
and special insight. The Sanskrit terms for these two meditation categories are Shamatha and Vipassana. Success in either practice can greatly reduce mental and emotional suffering, as well as uncover the true nature of oneself and the world. The combination of both mindfulness and special insight is the path to complete enlightenment.
The Essence of Mindfulness
Initially, Buddhist mindfulness meditation focuses on releasing attachment to thoughts and maintaining attention in the present moment without judgment. The practice involves letting go of past thoughts, being fully present, especially letting go of negative thoughts, and resting peacefully.
Another aspect of mindfulness meditation is easing physical tension to achieve full comfort in the present moment with a clear mind and open heart. This can be accomplished by focusing on an object, such as the breath, while sitting on a meditation cushion, or by focusing on the present situation in daily life.
Remaining mindfully present in the moment enhances mental flexibility and prevents being overwhelmed by negative thoughts and emotions. It allows for greater control over where one directs their focus.
Mindfulness expands awareness by opening new dimensions of experience. According to mindfulness expert Jon Kabit Zinn, mindfulness opens the door to a new relationship with life by freeing awareness from being entangled in thoughts and enabling a deeper connection to the reality of the present moment, leading to the emergence of insights.

The second main category of Buddhist meditation is special insight meditation, a form of direct knowledge that arises during mindfulness meditation. This special insight has the potential to eliminate all disturbing emotions and ignorance of one’s true nature, which are the root causes of human suffering and are gradually purified through mindfulness and special insight practices.
As the mind becomes stable and calm through mindfulness, realizations and insights naturally surface. These insights progress from general to subtle and profound, as heightened focus and clarity allow for the revelation of the true nature of the mind.
A common early realization in meditation training is the recognition of the incessant and distracting nature of the mind, constantly following thoughts without the ability to focus. This realization marks the beginning of meditation training and the journey toward taming the untamed mind and cultivating inner freedom. Understanding the chaotic nature of the mind ultimately leads to profound wisdom and enlightenment.
The Significance of Special Insight
Once the mind is trained to focus effortlessly on the breath in meditation or the present moment in daily life, one of the initial special insights that emerges is the realization of the impermanence of everything. By observing the ever-changing thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations, one gains a deep understanding that nothing remains constant.
This insight into impermanence highlights the transient nature of experiences and helps recognize that everything is energy, devoid of a permanent self. The body and mind, typically regarded as the basis of the self, are perceived as dynamic and ever-evolving entities.
A more subtle form of insight reveals that appearances are akin to illusions. It underscores the deceptive nature of perceptions, illustrating how our viewpoints can be misleading. By maintaining a clear and objective perspective through mindfulness meditation, one can discern that personal opinions and perspectives are relative, subject to change, and fundamentally mental constructs. Our interaction with the world is largely influenced by our mental projections, shaping our understanding of reality.
Author Robert Anton Wilson aptly stated:
“We don’t really see anything as it is, but rather as we are.”
By acknowledging our predispositions and biases, we begin to perceive the world as it truly is. Through focused attention and introspection, the realization dawns that there is no independent self. By observing the ever-changing nature of phenomena and the illusory appearances, the absence of a fixed, separate ego becomes evident. Upon close examination, one finds only a fluctuating body/mind and an unbounded awareness, devoid of a distinct egoic entity.
Attaining Enlightenment
According to Buddha, the fusion of mindfulness and special insights is the key to achieving perfect enlightenment. This union, characterized by a stable, clear attention and the wisdom of perceiving appearances as transient, illusory, and devoid of self, has the power to eliminate ego, dissolve attachments, and unveil an enlightened essence that has always existed.
The union of Calm-Abiding and Special Insight combines a focused attention with the profound understanding of the impermanent, illusory nature of appearances, leading to the dissolution of the ego and the revelation of a divine nature within.
The ultimate realization and
the supreme meditation
is the direct recognition that our essence embodies an ever-present, empty clarity infused with unconditional compassion and wisdom. By resting in the awareness of this enlightened luminous essence, one cultivates the most potent and profound insights through meditation.
The highest union is encapsulated in the meditation instruction:
there is nothing to meditate on, but don’t get distracted.
