During the summer, keeping things easy and breezy is key. This season, we’re focusing on maximizing our daily habits to work smarter, not harder. If you’ve already swapped out warm breakfasts for refreshing smoothies, you’re already giving your skin a boost with antioxidant-rich berries and fruits, helping protect it from sun damage. Alongside shielding against UV rays, your skin also craves extra hydration during these warmer months, even if it’s not naturally dry.

“When it’s hot outside, we tend to sweat more, leading to fluid loss from the skin, especially in the summer,” explains Jennifer Nicole Bianchini, MS, RD, IFNCP, a functional dietitian and the founder of Body to Soul Health. “Staying hydrated internally helps maintain fluid balance, promotes healthy skin, and enhances that natural glow,” she emphasizes, underscoring that good skin health starts from within and hinges on proper hydration.

Hydrating Your Skin with Summer Smoothie Ingredients

While drinking enough water is essential for skin hydration in the summer, Bianchini points out that water alone may not suffice to truly nourish and maintain the skin’s suppleness. “In the hot and humid summer months, excessive sweating not only results in fluid loss but also leads to mineral depletion,” she clarifies. Therefore, rehydrating isn’t just about replenishing fluids but also about restoring those vital minerals.

“Some of my go-to skin-hydrating ingredients for my morning smoothie include watermelon, cucumber, ginger, and coconut water,” she shares. “Not only are they hydrating and refreshing, but they also boast antioxidants, electrolytes, and minerals that help sustain fluid balance and promote radiant, healthy skin.”

Watermelon: Besides its hydrating properties, watermelon contains lycopene, a potent antioxidant that safeguards the skin against oxidative stress. “Lycopene plays a crucial role in shielding the skin, especially during extended sun exposure in the summer,” she notes.

Cucumber: Incorporating cucumber into your smoothie is a great way to boost your daily greens intake without altering the flavor—plus, cucumber is comprised of about 96% water. According to Bianchini, its cooling properties make it an ideal addition to your hydrating smoothie recipe.

Ginger: In hot weather, the body may experience increased inflammation, making ingredients like ginger beneficial for calming down inflammation and providing a refreshing kick in the morning. Aside from its anti-inflammatory properties, ginger aids digestion, contributing to more hydrated and glowing skin. “A healthy gut translates to healthy skin,” Bianchini emphasizes.

Coconut Water: Electrolytes play a vital role in drawing water into your cells, making their adequate intake crucial for hydration. Bianchini recommends coconut water as a natural source of electrolytes, offering excellent hydration and a touch of sweetness to your smoothie. Replace regular water with coconut water for added benefits this summer.

Key Points

In addition to optimizing your smoothie for enhanced hydration, incorporating skin-friendly supplements can help ensure your complexion remains supple throughout the summer. HUM Nutrition’s Red Carpet® Skin Hydration, formulated with black currant seed oil and vitamin E, supports nourishment from within. Another summer skincare supplement, Turn Back Time, targets common seasonal skin concerns, including UV damage.
