For over three thousand years, people have turned to body oils for skincare. From Cleopatra to ancient Indian physicians, the benefits have been well-known. Despite this, myths still persist around body oils today.

1. “They’re greasy and don’t absorb into the skin”
The most common misconception is that body oils are greasy and do not absorb well. However, not all oils are thick or pore-clogging. Many are light and quickly absorbed, known as non-comedogenic.
In 1989, dermatologist James Fulton created a comedogenic rating scale from 0 to 5 to assess an oil’s likelihood of clogging pores. For example, rosehip rates a 1, sunflower seed rates 0, and safflower rates 0. These oils are often layered in a well-formulated body oil blend to provide a luxurious feel without heaviness.
Timing also plays a role in absorption. Body oils are best applied on damp skin after a shower. The oil helps lock in moisture while being absorbed into the skin.
2. “They’ll stain my clothes and sheets”
While cheap, heavy oils may leave stains, a well-blended body oil is designed to penetrate the skin, not sit on the surface. Waiting a couple of minutes after application before getting dressed can prevent any staining.
Each Kanya body oil is formulated with Maracuja, Meadowfoam Seed, Moringa, Pumpkin Seed, Rosehip, Safflower, and Vitamin E. These ingredients are chosen for their low comedogenic properties and quick absorption, ensuring no stains are left behind. These same formulations are used in top spa treatments without any residue left on robes.
3. “Oils have a peculiar smell”
While cooking oils may have a strong scent, body oils are different. A quality body oil is crafted like a fine fragrance, with essential oils chosen for both their aroma and therapeutic benefits. Scent is not just for show; it can impact mood and nervous system activity, as shown in a 2010 study on jasmine oil.
4. “I use lotions — my body won’t tolerate oils”
Lotions are essentially a combination of oils, water, emulsifiers, preservatives, and fragrances. If you can use lotion, you can likely use oil as well. Some people even add a few drops of oil to their moisturizer for added hydration.
5. “I don’t have time for body oil”
Applying body oil only takes about a minute. There is no complicated process involved—simply warm it in your hands, apply it to your skin, and go. If you have time for moisturizer, you have time for body oil.
6. “Essential oils and body oils are the same”
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts intended for diffusers, baths, or diluted topical use. On the other hand, body oils are carrier oils blended with small amounts of essential oils, making them safe for direct skin application and designed to nourish while offering aromatherapy benefits.
7. “Body oils are only for spas”
You can create a spa-like experience at home by practicing self-oiling before a bath. This ancient Indian ritual called Abhyanga has been used for centuries to enhance circulation, soothe the nervous system, and foster a deeper connection with the body. Research even suggests that self-massage can be as effective as professional massage therapy.
8. “I’m too macho for body oils”
Men’s skin, being thicker than women’s, can benefit greatly from hydrating oils. Supporting skin health and collagen production through quality body oils is a simple yet effective way to care for the skin. Remember, scent and formulation are not gender-specific, and the results speak for themselves.
9. “Body oils can’t be used on the face”
Contrary to this belief, most well-formulated body oils are safe for facial use, provided you cleanse and dry your face beforehand. If you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, start with a non-comedogenic blend and perform a patch test. A single high-quality oil can potentially replace multiple facial products.
The truth about body oils
Just like people, oils have their own unique qualities. When you find the right oil for your skin and use it intentionally, the benefits go beyond mere moisture. It becomes a ritual that helps you connect with your body.
That’s the philosophy behind every Kanya formulation. Each of the six chakra-aligned body oils is based on the same non-comedogenic skincare oils, blended with different essential oils for specific intentions. The same intentional aromatherapy trusted by prestigious spas is now available for your personal use.
