Exploring Awareness
When practicing meditation, the goal is to understand what awareness truly is, devoid of attachment to any specific object. In a state of enlightenment, awareness itself becomes the focus of our attention.
To grasp the essence of this concept, one must let their focus expand beyond all objects within consciousness—beyond the physical body, beyond the mind, beyond the external world, and even beyond the vast universe. Even the universe can exist as an object within our consciousness.
The most challenging aspect of enlightenment is realizing that what we seek is not an object. Many of us are trapped in a dualistic experience of self and other, subject and object, self and enlightenment. Often, spiritual practices meant to cultivate awareness inadvertently reinforce this dualistic view.
A wise teacher once remarked,
“I’m glad you’ve found a friend you’ll never see.”
The enlightened mind is like a friend you can never perceive. This friend emerges when you realize that the most authentic part of yourself is already liberated.
It is impossible to be mindful or aware of this liberated part of yourself in a conventional manner. However, when you release all attachments, you will discover that this liberated part can respond with immense passion and precision, seemingly without any premeditation.
Suddenly, the right response will manifest. Only then do you become aware that a hidden part of yourself is always attentive, even when you are not consciously aware. This constant wakefulness is the spontaneous expression of enlightened awareness.
Many of us claim to desire enlightenment, but how many are truly prepared to let a friend we can never see guide our entire lives? For most, this notion is unfathomable as it requires a level of surrender that seems unimaginable.
This surrender entails relinquishing control from the ego. At this point, all judgments and assessments are abandoned, as you realize that what you seek cannot be grasped through the mind.
This marks the beginning of humility: when you establish a non-materialistic, unknowing connection with the incomprehensible mystery that is your true self. This paves the way for the unseen friend to communicate through you and ultimately become your authentic self.
