Strength. Connection. Harmony. These are the qualities symbolized by the moon. Its energy links and harmonizes every living entity on our planet.
The luminosity of September’s full moon—the Corn Moon—will peak on Sunday, September 7 at 2:09 pm EST. The optimal time to observe the full moon will be at twilight on September 7.
The Corn Moon vs. The Harvest Moon
Indigenous peoples named this moon after the season of corn harvesting. This full moon typically heralds the abundance of crops—such as corn, pumpkins, and squash—as late Summer transitions into Fall.
Fun fact: Not every year sees a Full Corn Moon. When September’s full moon occurs close to the Autumnal Equinox, it is known as the Harvest Moon. However, this year, the full moon closest to the equinox falls in early October, making September’s moon the Full Corn Moon.
The Total Lunar Eclipse
September’s Full Corn Moon coincides with a total lunar eclipse. A total lunar eclipse happens when Earth is perfectly aligned between the sun and the moon, casting its shadow over the moon. The 82-minute lunar eclipse will be visible starting at 11:28 am EDT on Sunday, September 7; however, it will occur during the daytime when the moon is below the horizon and thus, will not be visible in North or South America. Those in Asia, Africa, and Australia will have the best vantage points for this celestial phenomenon.
Why the Blood Moon?
A blood moon emerges during a total lunar eclipse. As the moon traverses Earth’s shadow, light from Earth’s sunrise and sunset is refracted through the atmosphere and projected onto the moon. This process filters out the blue light, leaving red wavelengths to illuminate the moon, giving it a deep red hue. The actual color that appears depends on atmospheric conditions at the time of the event. This year, the moon is expected to exhibit a reddish-orange tint.
Experience the Energy of Qi
Over the next two days, step outside into a space with a clear sightline to the moon. Look up and begin to grasp the power of this celestial body. Together with the sun, the moon has the ability to influence the ebb and flow of the ocean tides. Yet, the moon’s influence extends far beyond that!
Imagine what would happen to our planet if there was no moon. Without the moon to stabilize Earth, our seasons would be thrown into chaos, and our orbit around the sun would change significantly. Our cherished oceans would transform from dynamic wave pools to tranquil lake-like expanses of water. This alteration would disrupt the nutrient flow in the ocean, eventually leading to the extinction of numerous aquatic species. That’s the impact of the moon.
